Senuti 0.50 Beta

Sep 8, 2007 — Whitney Young (Updated Sep 8, 2007)

It's been a long time since there's been a release of Senuti, but the time has not been wasted. Senuti has been completely rewritten from the ground up, and many new features have been added. We are proud to announce that today the first beta release of Senuti 0.50 is available.

You can download the beta here. Please send me an email if you use this version and you have any comments (or even to let me know that it worked). If you have any issues with it, please open a ticket.

Here is a short list of changes since the 0.33 release:

  • Fixed AppleScript unicode issues
  • Improved integration with iTunes
  • Improved support for copying playlists
  • Various speed improvements
  • Automatic updates
  • Crash reporter
  • Translated to French and German
  • Ability to purchase a license to receive free updates for life

There are still a few things that will remain incomplete while this new version of Senuti is in beta:

  • Currently the application will open certain pages on the Fadingred.org site that might not display useful information. This will be fixed when a stable version is released.
  • License keys for qualifying donations will not be automatically emailed until the stable version is released.
  • The help documents have not been updated.

Any plans to support iPhones? I know iPhone's don't allow disk use, but I've seen Podwork now supports them and I'd rather use Senuti. Thanks for any info.

Whitney Young Sep 13, 2007

I hope to support the iPhone as soon as possible. Senuti use libgpod to read the iPod database, which will actually mean that support for the iPhone will probably come sooner rather than later. Once libgpod supports the iPhone, it shouldn't be long before Senuti does. There might be other issues that prevent Senuti from reading an iPhone, but more details will be available as libgpod adds support.

For now, if you have an iPhone and would like Senuti to work with it, the best thing that you can do is visit the libgpod project and try to give them any information/help that you can.

Support the iPhones will be really nice idea and actually quite needed work... So good luck with it!

The new iPod Classic and the new nano run a new version of the iPod software. Will Senuti work with them?

Whitney Young Sep 17, 2007

Senuti will not yet work with the new iPod Classic or Nano, but should shortly. The libgpod team is working hard on adding support for the new devices.

does work with the new ipod nano:

i downloaded senuti last night, to get my playlists off my new ipod nano (the stubby one with videos and games, just came out), and it worked without a hitch, recovered my playlists beautifully. so great job, and great application. thanks!

Whitney Young Sep 18, 2007

Thanks for the feedback, and it's good to know that it works with the new nanos.

Excuse my density

BUT

I"d like to replicate the iTunes library that resides on my home computer on my Mac book pro. How do I use Senuti to do this? When I plug the iPod into the MacBook it does not appear as a source or on desktop

Sorry to bother;have pity on the underinformed

Whitney Young Sep 20, 2007

You need to enable disk use. Please read the FAQ, and email support if you have more questions.

I used Senuti 0.33 together with a new ipod nano under osx 10.4.10 and it worked flawlessly. I was able to copy the songs from the nano to my hard drive without any problems. Thank you for this useful piece of software.

Will Senuti recover my contacts and calendars off the ipod too? Thanks for your time.

Whitney Young Sep 26, 2007

Senuti won't, but it's possible.

I've always used Yamipod to transfer songs from my iPod to my computer but everytime there is a new iTunes version it seems that Yamipod has to get updated as well. Yamipod has damaged my iPod's database or something like that and I have lost many songs. Is the same with Senuti that for each new iTunes version you have to come up with a newer version of Senuti? Thanks

Whitney Young Sep 28, 2007

There's always a possibility that Senuti will need to be updated for changes Apple makes in iTunes or with new iPods. That being said, Senuti hasn't needed to be updated for changes to iTunes since version 4.9 was released.

I installed Senuti on my Powermac G5 in order to transfer the songs from my 80G iPod.

The transfer of the files went flawlessly, but when your program started importing them into iTunes, after about 8,000 songs, it caused my whole computer to crash. (the grey screen telling me that I must restart my computer)

I tried it again and the same exact thing happened. Does senuti only run on intel based macs or is my computer just getting old? Anything you can think of to fix this problem?

Whitney Young Sep 30, 2007

Senuti wouldn't cause an issue like that. There's a good chance that your Firewire/USB port is broken or that you have a bad connection. This is really the only thing that would cause the whole computer to freeze like that. The way that OS X is designed wouldn't allow for Senuti to crash your whole computer without there being hardware problems.

Great piece of software. I travel with my Mac book and my ipod a lot, then bring the sounds back to my Mac Pro. And I can give my songs to others as well as get from them. This program makes it feel more communal to share. Thanks again!

Good luck with the updates. Big fan of Senuti and keen for iPhone and Classic iPod support.

Thanks

will senuti work with the ipod touch? it doesn't seem to be reading it. i'm not sure if it's because there's a new version of itunes or not but has anyone found it to work with the touch?

Dave Oct 2, 2007

Definitely doesn't work with my iPod Touch, I assume same issues as w/ the iPhone. Looking forward to seeing senuti work with my Touch.

Whitney Young Oct 2, 2007

Does the iPod Touch allow you to enable disk use like other iPods?

Debbie Oct 2, 2007

Where would I have read that Senuti does not work with Classic Ipod yet-besides right here? I did test with 1 CD and it transferred just great, then I tried with over 800 songs now my Macbook froze up. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks

Whitney Young Oct 2, 2007

Generally when the computer freezes it's because of a bad hardware connection (USB).

annie Oct 3, 2007

Is there any software similar to Senuti that you would recommend for use with PCs? Thank you!

Tim Oct 3, 2007

Annie -- try iDump.
