Universal Binary Update

Posted by Whitney Young Fri, 17 Feb 2006 01:20:00 GMT

I forgot to post an update here, but it looks like Senuti is now running fine on the Intel machines (as of version 0.32) thanks to help from a few users. Thanks!

Universal Binary Issues

Posted by Whitney Young Sat, 21 Jan 2006 08:04:00 GMT

Well unfortunately the transition to Universal Binary was not as smooth as I would have hoped for Senuti. There appear to be problems with the integration of Senuti with Libgpod on Intel machines. This problem is likely an easily fixable problem dealing with configuration of different GNU tools. With access to one of the new Intel Macs, it would be far easier to fix this problem. For now, though, I’ll have to wait to hear from different users who have access. Until then, Intel users please use version 0.29 which will run fine under Rosette.

Good Things

Posted by Whitney Young Wed, 04 Jan 2006 07:52:00 GMT

A lot of good things have happened recently around here. Senuti 0.29 won both a Playlist Plays of the year award from playlistmag.com as well as an Eddy from the kind folks over at Macworld. If you couldn’t guess, I’m extremely excited that Senuti was given these great honors. Right around the same time version 0.29 became the most downloaded version of Senuti with over 100,000 downloads.

So what do you do when things are going well? Make them better! Version 0.30 of Senuti has a lot of changes under the hood that will allow Senuti to do some of the things I’ve always wanted it to. Underneath of Senuti is now a great little library called libgpod which is the same library at the core of gtkpod for GNU/Linux. This might not mean a lot to many users, but it means a lot to me. There could be a very exciting future for Senuti!

The Switch to Intel

Posted by Whitney Young Thu, 17 Nov 2005 02:10:00 GMT

I imagine that the transition should go fairly smoothly. Rosette seems like it will work pretty well for many applications that can’t compile right away for x86. By that I mean that from reports it seems like users will be able to run the applications without noticing too much of a speed lag if any at all.

From reports around the internet it seems that Apple might be ahead of schedule. That’s all just speculation, so it’s hard to say one way or another.

Anyway, my plan at this time is to release universal binaries for each of my applications around the time that the Intel machines start to ship (or possibly sooner). I’ll hope to be able to make all of the universal binaries run on the same PPC platforms that they do right now. The information to target different settings for different architectures was buried deep in Apple’s documentation, but it looks like it should be possible to get universal binaries that can work on all systems down to the ones that are currently supported. I don’t have a way of testing on Intel machines, so I’ll have to rely on community feedback (I have recieved a report that Senuti runs just fine on OS X for x86 when compiled for the x86 machines and don’t know how it does under Rosette, but that shouldn’t be an issue).

I’m posting this to give anyone who strongly objects the chance to do so, but I don’t see any reason that anyone would.

New site design

Posted by Whitney Young Thu, 10 Nov 2005 03:09:00 GMT

Well it’s been a long time since I’ve written anything here. In part I haven’t written anything because I wanted to keep the Coder Wanted post from August up as long as possible. (AmbitiousLemon is still looking for a Coder for the project.) The other reason is because I’ve been extremely busy with school. I’ve had a little free time recently, though, and have updated the site slightly.

I’ve wanted for a long time to update the site to something like this, and I’m pleased with the way that it turned out. I hope everyone likes it!

On another note, Senuti 0.29 flew past all previous releases in the number of initial downloads. I’d like to send thanks out to everyone who has helped spread the word recently, and please keep letting your friends know!

Update

Posted by Whitney Young Thu, 04 Aug 2005 16:29:00 GMT

So it’s been a long time since I’ve given an update on what I’ve been up to. I’ve been far busier than I expected to be this summer, so I unfortunately haven’t had as much time as I would have liked to work on my software. Currently I’m working on a site for the people at AmbitiousLemon. My main focus for the summer will be completing that site. If I finish that, I plan to jump right back into working on my software.

I have a lot of changes that I’m planning on making in both Senuti and Cashbox. The next version of Cashbox will include a new icon thanks to a friend in the AL community. It will also have a completely redesigned user interface. I’ll also hope to get a chance to update my site to comply with web standards and fix areas of the back-end that are no longer working.

On a completely separate note, I’d like to note a very significant change in regards to donations for software. As of this month, 10% of all donations will be donated to charity. When I update the site, I will include a lot more information about these donations, but if you have questions, feel free to e-mail me.

I’d like to thank you all for your continued support to my work and inspiring me to take my little projects farther than I ever thought they’d go.

Tiger arrived

Posted by Whitney Young Mon, 09 May 2005 16:27:00 GMT

Tiger arrived today. I’ve had a chance to compile and suppress warnings in Senuti and will check out my other applications over the next few days. So far I am extremely impressed with Tiger. It continues to amaze me that every major upgrade of OS X is significantly faster. I haven’t managed to check out all of the 200+ new features yet, but the ones that I have seen appear to be all that Apple said they were. I’d recommend going out and getting a copy as soon as you can, especially those of you still on Jaguar. It’ll be worth it!
